Then, I explore other effects like Effect>>Stylize>> Outer Glow, Effect>> Stylize>> Feather to add contrast against detailed background and nice glow effect. Then I use Effect>> Warp>> Shell Upper for the top statement and Shell Lower for the bottom substatement.

I use Pencil Tool to draw bushes in the distance. Then, I use PaintBrush Tool set at Charcoal-Feather brush to create the texture. After that, I use Rectangle Tool and Pen Tool to draw a hut. Gradient Tool is used to colour. Scale Tool is used to adjust the size of the duplicated hut.

This is a pair of hands cupped a little and close together drawn using Pen Tool. I picked the colour from a photo using Eyedropper Tool. I experiment with the strokes and colour to improve visibility. Meanwhile, I add dried-up irrigation at the bottom left using Pen Tool and Mesh Tool which will be edited later.

Here, I set the opacity of the hands lower so that it don't block images behind. I bring the paddy layer forward. Using Pen Tool and Warp Tool, I edit the irrigation.

Using Pen Tool, I draw a wilted paddy stalk. Then, I Rotate and Reflect the stalks and use Scale Tool to vary the stalks. Then, with the different variations, I set them as Symbol. Using Symbol Sprayer, I distribute wilted plants on the cracked earth. Then, I use Symbol Scruncher Tool and Symbol Shifter Tool to change the shapes of the wilted stalks. I changed the gradient colour for the cracked earth and font colour for the word "YOUR" in `The Future is in YOUR Hands'.

This is the new edited irrigation. The texture on the ground is made using PaintBrush Tool set at Ink Splatter brush. Then, I use Effects>> Blur>> Rdial Blur set at 12. Gradient Tool is used for the base colouring.

I change the font colour for the word YOUR. Next, I use PaintBrush Tool with chalk scribbe brush for the furthest trees and Effect>>Blur>>Gaucassion Blur to create depth. More edits are done here. Added darker shade for the hand outline.

Scope Planning

Assignment 3 Title: 'Rice' to the Future, the Future is in Your Hands

Project Start Date: August 19, 2008

Projected Finish Date: September 9, 2008.

Project Manager:

HP: 017-3053382

Email: angie_chongwc@hotmail.com

Project Objectives:

The objective of this poster is to create an awareness amongst people about the importance of conserving rice supply for its abundance in future. The poster calls everyone to rise to the occassion of food shortage for the sake of our own future. It is our responsibility and actions must be taken now to ensure life in abundance. This project relates 3 assignments. 1st assignment is to design a symbol to represent the area of choice in global warming. I designed a symbol that shows the effect of drought to the land and how it affects the global rice shortage. Using cracked rice bowl with grains falling into the cracks of earth and a pair of chopsticks holding on a single grain of rice, I create the awareness of this issue that is not widely known. For the 2nd assignment, I draw an illustration of a section of a vast paddy field with ripe paddy stalks bended under the bright sun and clean blue sky. This is to state that this is how things should be instead of poor harvest and drought. Therefore, for the 3rd assignment, to design a poster of awareness, I will combine these 2 concepts and show that if we act now, the ideal environment can be preserved and ensure life in abundance.

Approach:

1. I use basic tools like Pen Tool, PaintBrush Tool, Pencil Tool, and Shape Tools (eg. Rectangle Tool, Flare Tool), to draw the objects.

2. For objects with a lot of duplicates, I use Symbol Sprayer Tool. Then, I use Symbol Sizer, Symbol Scrunger, and Symbol Shifter tools to create variation.

3. I use Eyedropper Tool, Live Paint Bucket Tool, and Gradient Tool to colour.

4. I use Type Tool for the text in the poster.

5. For extra effects to the drawings and fonts, I use Gaussian Blur, Radial Blur, Outer Glow, Feather, Extrude and Bevel, Warp (eg. Shell Lower, Shell Upper)

Roles and Responsibilities:

Week 9- I started to plan the layouts and how the overall look that I want for my poster. I searched for poster layouts and take note of the type of positioning that attracts my attention.

Week 10- I started sketching while referring to the notes I've taken on layouts. During this week's tutorial session, I referred to my tutor about the layouts of my objects and the texts. After getting the approval on it, I worked on the title and main statement.

Week 11- I researched on my area of choice again for the right message to be shown. From a choice of statements, I finally picked " 'Rice' to the Future, the Future is in Your Hands" as my statement. I updated blog with my progress so far. Then, I start working on the poster in Illustrator until completion.

Week 12- A few additions and edits. Printing and mounting must be done for submission.

Comment:

This project drives me to learn new skills using a vector program. I had fun in the process as I like learning new things, though it is very busy nearing the final submission with workloads and presentations from other classes. One of the toughest parts of the project is the way to convey the right message in the image. The statement must sum up your ideas and gives a strong message.

Sketches

I experimented with various placement and size of the text.
Several distinct weather- and climate-related incidents have caused disruptions in crop production. Perhaps the most influential is the extended drought in Australia, in particular the fertile Murray-Darling Basin, which produces large amounts of wheat and rice. The drought has caused the annual rice harvest to fall by as much as 98% from pre-drought levels. Australia is historically the second-largest exporter of wheat after the United States, producing up to 25 million tons in a good year, the vast majority for export. However, the 2006 harvest was 9.8 million. Other events that have negatively affected the price of food include the 2006 heat wave in California's San Joaquin Valley, which killed large numbers of farm animals, and unseasonable 2008 rains in Kerala, India, which destroyed swathes of grain. Scientists have stated that several of these incidents are consistent with the predicted effects of climate change.

Soil and productivity losses

Sundquist points out that large areas of croplands are lost year after year, due mainly to soil erosion, water depletion and urbanisation. According to him "60,000 km2/ year of land becomes so severely degraded that it loses its productive capacity and becomes wasteland", and even more are affected to a lesser extend, adding to the crop supply problem. Additionally, agricultural production is also lost due to water depletion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_price_crisis#Crop_shortfalls_from_natural_disasters

<sup id="cite_ref-78" class="reference">
</sup>

Assignment 2- Final

Title: Rice Abundance

Ideation:
This is my final illustration for Assignment2. I chose to draw a section of a vast paddy field to show that we should preserve our rice supply so that there'll be plenty for the population. The paddy stalks here are bended and the grains are ripe, signifying the richness and abundance of rice we ought to have. Not only that, I drew unpolluted water and clear blue sky to show that we must preserve mother nature for a better future.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
smaller area of Global Warming: Global Rice Shortage
Paddy growth depends on water supply, but world's water freshwater supply is running out. Moreover, global warming is affecting this by causing drought spells frequently. Other causes affecting rice supply are the erosion and the loss of organic matter in soils, desertification, the loss of ozone from the stratosphere and its increase in the troposphere, acid rain, the decrease in biological diversity, air pollution, and flooding caused by deforestation.
We must save mother nature for our survival in the future. Actions must be taken NOW as the rice supply worldwide is diminishing while population increases. Therefore, I draw an illustration of abundance of rice and the clean environment to create an awareness amongst the people.
References:
http://www.newscientist.com/
http://www.irri.org/
http://www.nytimes.com/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colours:
Yellow = Symbolizes ripe rice grains to signify abundance.

Green = In the leaves and stems of paddy stalks. Then, I set the layer as template so that it won't appear in print.

Then I make a new layer named "sky". Under "sky", I make a sublayer for the "base". Then I use Pen Tool(P) to draw the frame. To colour it I use Gradient Tool(G) and set it as radial using white and a light shade of blue to make it look like sunshine.

Next I make a new sublayer under "sky" named "clouds". I use Pencil Tool(N) to draw the clouds. Then I use Effects>>Blur>>Gaucassion Blur and set it at 7.0 pixels. Next, I use Selection Tool(V) to adjust the size.

After that, I lock the "sky" layer and make a new layer named "soil". This will be a section of my paddy field. I create a new sublayer named "base". Then, I use Pen Tool(P) and fill it with the colour latte. I set the opacity as 50% so that i can see my sketch below.

I created layers and sublayers for my paddy field first so that it'll be organized. Will be working on this a long time. Posting this in case i forgot to screenshot later [too engaged in the process -_-"]

As I expected, I did get too absorbed in the process. XD What i done here is under the layer "paddy", sublayer "main stalk1", i use Pen Tool(P) to draw the stem and leaves' outlines and veins. Then i use Live Paint Bucket(K) to fill in the colours. After that, i duplicate the leaves under "main stalk1" and paste them on "main stalk2" and "main stalk3". Next using Object>>Transform to rotate and resize the leaves to create a variation. Phew.. now that the main leaves are almost done, I'll start on "grains"

For the rice grains on the paddy stalks, I use Ellipse Tool(L). I use Gradient(G) for the colour in linear setting. Then i duplicate one single grain into many to form a chain. Next, I use Direct Selection Tool (A) to group the chain for easier selection. More chains are duplicated and using Object>>Transform>>Rotate to create variation.

More duplicating... -happy with result of 2 stalks- Then, *zooms out*...
[practically fainted]
I have a looooong way to go.... -_-""

*runs to a wall and bangs head* X_x

-dead- Anyways, more duplications. I vary the sizes with Selection Tool(V) and shapes using Warp Tool(Shift+R). Along this process, I made the leaves lighter and the stalks blurer using Effects>>Blur>>Gaucassion Blur, the further the paddy stalks are. Half-dead now. Wow, time flies! Need to grab a bite.
To be continued~~~

back. I make a new layer named "irrigation" and sublayers "ground" and "water". For the ground, I experimented with Blend Tool. Then I use gradient for the colour. I use Wrinkle Tool for the sides of the ground. Next, I use Pen Tool(L) for the base colour of water and Warp Tool for the effect I want. Then, I make a new sublayer named "reflection" for the reflection of paddy on surface of water. Using Pen Tool(P), I draw the basic lines and then blurring it using Gaucassian Blur. For extra effect I use Twirl Tool.

Under the layer "soil", I make sublayers named "uneven", "shadow" and "water". Using Brush Tool and chalk brush, I make uneven lines around the base of the stalks. Then I put a layer of water on top with lower opacity so that it is see-through. Next, I use Ellipse Tool and Crystallize Tool for the shadows.

Added my Symbol.
Is there anything to add?
Ah wells.. Too tired now anyways. Good night people.

Apparently, my illustrator lag after I use Blend Tool. So I check the file size.
.....54MB??!!!
Alright time for drastic action. Don't want my file lag the lecturer's computer and get me a 0%.
I deleted the Blend Tool layer and use Pen Tool instead with Gradient.
Then I use Brush Tool with ink splatter brush for texture.

Told you I'll be editing and editing XDD. Anyways I added reflection of the paddy stalks on the surface of water on the soil. First I Reflect the stalk and set it at Copy. And reduce the opacity.
Ta-daaa~ almost done~ Hopefully XD

Added shadows and I shall call it a day [looks at time] 2:20am @_@

Assignment 2- Sketches

Sketches done last week.
Global warming leads to rice shortage. This is caused by the warmer temperature that increases evaporation rate on surfaces of water all over the world. The land and rivers dry up and thus leads to drought. That cuts off the water supply to irrigate the paddy fields. As the environment is not optimum for paddy growth, production of rice will be halted.

Meanings of Shapes and Metaphors in Symbol:
the circle represents the earth and this means that it is a global issue.

The cracked land shows that global warming dries up the land and causes drought.

The bowl symbolizes all the paddy fields and rice supply of the world.

The crack on the bowl shows that the purity & well-being of the paddy fields are tarnished as a result from the irresponsible acts of man towards nature.

The falling of rice into the cracks in soil symbolizes the loss of rice supply to drought.

The chopsticks represent that man’s irresponsible actions to nature causes global warming and lead to poor harvest.

The single grain of rice held by the chopsticks shows that men were only able to acquire a meager amount of rice from their harvest, due to the global rice shortage.

The spiral in the sun shows that this problem would grow worse as the spiral progresses and becomes bigger if man failed to solve this growing problem.

Meaning of Colours: This causes land to dry up and leads to drought. paddy cannot survive in dry soil.

Besides, depletion of ozone layer also affects paddy growth. An increase of UV radiation would affect crops. A number of economically important species of plants, such as rice, depend on cyanobacteria residing on their roots for the retention of nitrogen. Cyanobacteria are sensitive to UV light and they would be affected by its increase.

Reference pics:

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
